Being a travel nurse can be rewarding when you know you’re uniquely qualified and you can find the nurse travel jobs. Your benefits and pay should reflect this. In order to avoid common salary mistakes and get what you absolutely deserve, here are a couple of things to consider:
1. Not doing your research well
Whether you’re a pro of travel nursing or just getting started, it’s always a good idea to research your value – whenever you can. You might be surprised to find that your value has changed over the years you’ve had to work as a travel nurse. Just like most professions, the nursing market continues to evolve day in day out and your experiences coupled with skills levels matter. Research your worth over time and always go for nursing jobs that pay accordingly. Take time to understand how the nurse pay rates work. Several factors such as patient needs and locations affect what ranges you fit in.
2. Lack of a long-term career plan
Always think critically or better yet strategically about the skills you want to nurture, and specialties you want to focus on. This puts in a strategic position to earn more eventually experiencing the fulfillment that comes with setting your goals and achieving them. When developing a career plan, one major factor to consider should be your strengths and what you enjoy in your nursing career. This helps you define and develop clear goals. Your goals should match the conventional SMART for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound goals.
3. Ignoring details
When an opening comes up in the nursing industry, it’s important to look at the bigger picture of what you have on the table. What are the small often ignored details regarding the terms of the contract? How does the agency pay? What is the offer’s blended pay rate also known as the full package which entails incidental expenditures, housing, and medical benefits?
While it’s not always easy to get everything in line to see things clearly, taking your time and doing your research will come in handy. Don’t hesitate to ask your employing agency clarifying questions.
4. Not maximizing your benefits and stipends
While stipends may not be the money in the bank, they are and always will be a part of your compensation package. When you use them, give yourself a bump by being smart. Cut down on lodging costs by carefully evaluating your needs. What amenities are necessary and how much space do you really require? If boosting your earnings from your nursing assignments then you’ll have to adjust your hours. Over time, holiday, call-back and on-call shifts will positively affect what you take home.
5. Focusing on salary alone.
As much as your salary is important, it should not be the end-all goal. Avoid this mistake. Remain on your track with your objectives and invest in your career as a professional. Most importantly, keep yourself happy. Always take into consideration your personal priorities when evaluating your salary. You may value working at a specific location than another one – being closer to family or friends or working at a location you really find interesting for one reason or another.
All this might affect your end goals or outweigh the few extra dollars you want to keep. If you need to gather experience in a specific field/specialty or a specific health facility then understand how and why this will positively or negatively affect your paycheck. This doesn’t always mean it’s the best opportunity.
